1) Fearless:
In what way does the story of your movie follow on from the original Day of the Dead?

Clavell:
It tackles a possible origin to Night of the Living Dead, and recreates a mythology of how it possibly evolved into the horrifying reality of Day of the Dead…

2) Fearless:
How did you come to write the script and also to co-direct?

Clavell:
Given the gruelling shooting schedule, we decided that shooting at two separate sets at the same time was the best solution to meet our deadline. I have worked with James Dudelson on many previous projects including Morella, Lessons for an Assassin and Horror 101, so we had no problems sharing a co-directorial credit. As for writing it - I just got a couple of ideas that I pitched to Taurus. They liked the concept and asked me to write the script.

3) Fearless:
Did your idea come about because of the success of the Dawn of the Dead remake?

Clavell:
No, we had been developing other scripts since 1997, and had shot a small budget zombie film in 2001 called Museum of the Dead, which was well before the announcement of the Dawn remake.

4) Fearless:
Is it fair to assume you are a big fan of Romero's work?

4) Fearless:
Is it fair to assume you are a big fan of Romero's work?

Clavell:
I grew up watching his movies and I was fortunate enough to see them in the cinema. One of the things I like the most was how human his characters are, and the commentary on our modern-day society. And, what can I say? I'm a sucker for doomsday scenarios...

5) Fearless:
What can you tell me about the story to Day of the Dead 2: Contagium?

Clavell:
It starts in 1968, at a military hospital, where a Russian spy has been taken after been exposed to a strange substance inside vials he has stolen from the USSR. Unfortunately, the contagium – the virus - infects everyone and someone higher up orders the total destruction of this people. Fast forward to contemporary times, the hospital has been demilitarized and is now a mental institution. Our heroes are a group of patients who find a vial containing the virus and unfortunately unleash it to nasty consequences.

6) Fearless:
How will your sequel differ from the other recent zombie films such as 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead and Resident Evil?

Clavell:
I think maybe in that it has a lot of socio-political commentary, in reference to the Cold War and the sorry state of institutionalized health

7) Fearless:
What was your relationship, if any, to the original Day of the Dead?

Clavell:
My only relationship is that of a fan; on the other hand, Taurus owns and distributes the original. Hence, the sequel…

8) Fearless:
So do you also own the rights to the characters from the first film and - if so - does this mean we might see the return of Bub or anyone else from Day of the Dead?

Clavell:
Taurus does; personally, I don't think Day of the Dead needs to be remade, but there is the possibility of continuing the characters, maybe in a comic book format – perhaps the fans have some suggestions?

9) Fearless:
Can you tell me a little about the schedule and budget of Day of the Dead 2?

Clavell:
I can tell you that the shooting schedule was crazy, and the budget was comfortable but not in the multi-million standards of Hollywood.

10) Fearless:
Was there ever a temptation, or attempt, to get any of the original Day of the Dead actors involved?

Clavell:
It would have been a completely different story; also, I would have probably been too awestruck to yell "cut" on set if they had been around!
